    Dear ISS teachers,

A woman currently undergoing chemotherapy to cure a breast cancer is wishing to have shiatsu sessions to relieve the side effects of her treatment.

I would be ready to try and give her very soft shiatsu, yet I remember that we should wait until we are quite experienced practitioners before treating clients with cancers.

I would be very happy to have your opinion about it.

    With many thanks in advance.

    Liebe Anne-Sophie,

Pamela Ferguson, who is an internationally reknown Shiatsu teacher and years ago has suffered from breats cancer (and defeated it), said she will answer your question in a few days. Do you know that she is teaching a workshop on exactly this topic this coming weekend in Kiental?

    with love,

    Wilfried

    Dear Anne- Sophie,

I hope that you already started to treat the woman, who is undergoing chemotherapy. You asked how much expierience you need to give her Shiatsu. If you are not a beginner and feel ready to give her treatments, then you should do this.
As usuell it is good to work with what you find in your diagnosis and to look from your heart. Maybe it could be good to give her soft Shiatsu. It can be also good to treat her in a direct und clear way, because the existential fear of having cancer and not knowing what will hapen can create a lot of tension. Just listen to her response to your touch.

For your orientation you can ask yourself , if the treatment supports her selfregulation or not, if she feels better or not. If she gets very tired or exhausted in or after the treatment, than you should work even softer. A treatment is an energetic information and can be too much for a weak person and if the reciever gets weaker through the treatment then it could be too much information.

Recieving Shiatsu during chemotherapy is a good way to support someones selfregulation and some of side effects have to do with the lake of possibilities to regulate oneself.

    Best wishes
    Meike

    Dear Meike and Wilfried,

Thank you very much for your answers – keeping the receiver’s „self-regulation“ in mind and heart is a useful landmark to adjust the treatments while they unfold (I have not started to treat the person yet).

All the very best, and thank you again.

Dear Anne-Sophie – I just returned to USA so forgive the late response. I have written extensively about breast cancer nd shiatsu – check my columns in http://www.Acupuncturetoday.com (in English) or the German translation printed online by the Austrian Shiatsu journal. Where are you based? Am also happy to phone you in case you have specific questions related to your client. There are enormous differences in the way you treat such clioents depending on – a)health profile, b)prognosis, c)extent of cancer, d) surgery, e) metastatic profile, f) therapy combinations etc. So do post further q

    Dear Pamela,

I have a client (woman, 34 years old) who has lung cancer (not because of smoking but because of a dns-mutation), the tumor is big like a fist and there are metastases in the lymphatic system, in  the second lung, in vertebras, …

She is – according to her age – normally strong and healthy, now the cancer started to cause fever every day and the feels rather tired.

There is not yet a valid prognosis concerning how long she still has to live, but she will only be treated according to palliative care; surgery ist not possible. So she will get chemotherapy from today on, and mayby a new medicine of pfizer after two runs of chemotherapy.

Do you have recommendations for Shiatsu treatments in this special case? (I give a treatment once a week.)

    Best regards and many thanks,

    Clemens
